A little workplace fun can liven up your employees’ day and help them bond as a team. That’s why we think it’s a good idea to encourage harmless April Fools’ Day pranks. FUN is the name of the game—so set some ground rules and focus on teamwork and respect.

Set Ground Rules for Your Workplace Fun

Establish some ground rules beforehand and ban anything personally embarrassing or potentially destructive. Beyond that, though, a silly prank can serve as a welcome break from the workday! As Instructables contributor Ludionis writes in “A Collection of Easy Office Pranks”:

“In my humble opinion, a good prank can be set up and executed quickly and effectively. Sure, it would be funny to wallpaper someone’s office with post-it notes, or fill their cubicle with packing peanuts, but who has the time or resources for that?  My favorite prank is the one where nobody is hurt or overly humiliated, and that everyone can enjoy a good laugh afterward.”

Great April Fools’ Pranks

Out of ideas or strapped for time? Fear not!

Check out this Reuters article, “April Fools pranks that won’t get you fired.” They provide a list of favorite office pranks (and include a few videos of some extreme examples that you might not want to encourage). Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Screen flip. Click Ctrl+Alt+the down arrow on someone’s personal computer and its display will appear upside down. (To reverse it after sufficient annoyance, use the same shortcut with the up arrow.)
  • No service. Put “out of service” signs on toilet stalls and elevator doors for a little excitement.
  • Mopey mouse. Put tape on the bottom of someone’s computer mouse (with an April Fools sticker) so the mouse doesn’t work.
  • Booby-trapped chair. Put a Whoopee Cushion on a coworker’s chair and then wrap the chair in paper or foil. He or she will think the wrapping is the joke before sitting down. And then …
