Staff appreciation is easier than you think!

Staff Appreciation Matters!

Staff appreciation is not only important, it’s critical! In “Why Recognition,” employee recognition firm Globoforce lists the bottom-line benefits of staff appreciation:

Drive Measurable Business Results—The simple act of recognizing employees has a proven impact on your bottom line.

Retain Top Talent—Recognize your employees and they’ll stay, grow, and thrive. Great recognition has a proven, direct impact on retention.

Breathe Life Into Your Values—Use employee recognition to make values actionable for employees every day.

Inspire Employee Engagement—Appreciation inspires not only emotional commitment but discretionary effort.

And that’s important, the Globoforce website notes:

Staff Appreciation is Fundamental

Everybody craves appreciation. As Kim Harrison, consultant and principal of Cutting Edge PR writes in “Why employee recognition is so important,” appreciation is a fundamental human need. Employees best understand the value of their work when we recognize their efforts through concrete appreciation.

“When employees and their work are valued, their satisfaction and productivity rises, and they are motivated to maintain or improve their good work.”

Two Aspects to Staff Appreciation

According to Harrison, staff appreciation has two aspects. The first is to see and identify an opportunity to praise someone — it’s all too easy to miss opportunities! The second is, of course, doing something to acknowledge and praise staff for their good work.

Staff Appreciation is Affordable

Staff appreciation doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive, and according to Harrison, “the cost of a recognition system is quite small and the benefits are large when implemented effectively.”

Forbes contributor Kevin Kruse lists “25 Low-Cost Ways to Reward Employees.” Here are just three of his ideas:

Staff Appreciation is Good Business

Bob Nelson, president of Nelson Motivation, Inc. and author of 1501 Ways to Reward Employees, is known for pithy quotes about staff appreciation. He sums it up in an oft-cited statement found at BrainyQuote, among other places:

“People may take a job for more money, but they often leave it for more recognition.”
