Kindness is Contagious! It’s Do Something Nice Day!

Ideally—in our home and work lives—we all practice daily kindness. But today, “Do Something Nice Day,” is an especially good time to do good things for family, friends, and employees. Even a bright smile can lift someone’s spirits and become contagious – inspiring them to share kindness to others and setting in motion a wave of kindness!

You can do kind things openly or discretely.

The Pay it Forward Foundation is spreading the word by working with director David Gaz on a documentary called Kindness Is Contagious. The documentary, narrated by novelist Catherine Ryan Hyde (author of Pay It Forward), follows true-life stories of kindness and gratitude from all walks of life and expert commentary on the power of kindness in our lives.

Other at-work acts of kindness could include:

• Posting messages on social media thanking employees for their efforts
• Giving inexpensive gift certificates (such as gThankYou! certificates for ice cream).
• Bringing in lunch for the team.

• Put money into someone’s expired parking meter
• Buy coffee for the person in line behind you
• Smile at a stranger
• Take the time to sincerely ask how someone else is doing.

In “101 Ways to Reward Employees (Without Giving Them Cash),” Mike Michalowicz, CEO of the Provendus Group, offers other ideas you could use to celebrate Do Something Nice Day at work.

• Write a thank you note! Thanking an employee for something specific may be the ultimate reward.
• Award an extra half-day off work, at your employees’ convenience.
• Tell your local paper about your employees’ success. When the item gets printed, frame it and give to your employees.

Do Something Nice Day comes but once a year. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be doing nice things all year, at work and at home. Get in the habit!
