Breakfast casseroles are among the most forgiving of family-friendly dishes. Put whatever you have lying around the fridge, from bell peppers and caramelized onions to broccoli and asparagus, into a casserole like this one from EatingWell, and it’s a good bet it will be delicious.
Even better for post-holiday noshing, this casserole is “light,” made healthier “primarily by losing a few egg yolks and using nonfat milk. Gruyère cheese has a delicious, nutty aroma and flavor, which means that with the relatively small amount in this recipe you still get a big impact.” What a great way to start your morning.

Warm, gooey and sinfully simple to make, Ina Garten’s croque monsieur sandwich is baked in the oven with a bit of Dijon mustard for spice.

What makes a great Cuban sandwich something people will drive across town for is that combination of spicy mustard, sour pickles, salty and sweet ham and juicy pork.
These mini versions from Food52, are “easy to make (and) delicious to eat … good for kids or adults.” The recipe author says they can be made ahead and eaten cold or reheated, and the mini version is perfect for a crowd.

The idea of putting everything and anything into macaroni and cheese isn’t new. There’s mac and cheese pizza in Wisconsin. Zingerman’s Roadhouse in Ann Arbor has no fewer than a half-dozen variations on the menu at any time: pimento bacon macaroni, an andouille sausage mac, a version with smoked chicken, fresh corn, green chiles and monterey jack, “three peppercorn goat cheese” and a baked ziti with heirloom tomato sauce and fresh herbs.
This marvelous version from Saveur, ideal for ham leftovers, adds cayenne pepper for a little kick and repurposes leftover biscuits for a buttered crumb topping.
