National Teacher DayToday, May 6, is National Teacher Day, with celebrations extending through Friday for National Teacher Appreciation Week.
You’re probably thinking about blackboards and shiny red apples — and realizing you still remember your first-grade teacher’s name, all these years later. It’s a great time to help your children thank their teachers this week, and reach out to share your gratitude with those teachers who have motivated, inspired and helped you along the way.
But National Teacher Day isn’t only a celebration of school teachers. Think of it as a celebration of all the people along the way who’ve taught us the skills and life lessons that make us who we are today — piano teachers, coaches, 4-H leaders, mentors, friends, relatives, and even bosses.
Here at gThankYou’s Celebrating Work blog, we talk a lot about the importance of employee appreciation and creating an overall culture of workplace gratitude to workplace success.
Honoring the people who teach us is a big part of that.
A theme that emerges in employee satisfaction research is how much employees crave learning and opportunities for skill growth. James Schrager, professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, was recently asked in a Wall Street Journal article, “What is the one change that many small firms could make that would make their companies more attractive places to work?”
Create more opportunities for learning, Schrager responded: “Small firms could be more attractive places if they provided even a modest amount of learning outside the job.” He gives as examples sending a few employees to a ‘One Day University’ course, or spending lunch hours once a month having managers talk about their jobs and the issues they face.
Today and all this week, in addition to honoring school teachers, take some time to think about what you learn from your coworkers and other business associates. Consider sending a thank-you note to each person to let them know how much what you’ve learned has meant to you.
And, don’t forget to celebrate your favorite teachers publicly on social media with the hashtag #ThankATeacher.

This week, expand your definition of “teacher.” Encourage your employees and coworkers to join you in building workplace gratitude by thanking all your best teachers — from all aspects of your life.
