In a recent post we discussed Clif Bar‘s exceptional employee benefits that attract and retain great employees. Enterprise management software Palantir does this as well. Like Clif Bar, the company strives to improve quality of life with workforce perks that enhance employees’ lives. As its website says,
“From protecting privacy and civil liberties to promoting open software to pursuing philanthropic engagements to a host of other initiatives, we put our values to work in the service of making the world a better place, every day.”
Life at Palantir means choosing your own adventure, and the company strives to make life “fun and easy” for its employees. Read on to learn how their employee benefits accomplish that!
Truly Flexible Schedules
Palantir has no set hours. It doesn’t track vacation time; people just take what they need.
As long as the work gets done, workers are free to work whatever schedule suits them. While some come in during normal business hours, others spend 16 hours a day at the office, as the website says:
“… not because they’re working that whole time, but because the office is a great place to be.”
fun and stimulating workplace
Palantir’s office has dedicated media rooms with TVs and projectors for watching sports, movies, or playing multiplayer video games.
There are also organized games of pickup basketball, soccer, and ultimate Frisbee, and teams play in local basketball leagues. Near Palantir’s Palo Alto headquarters, cyclists enjoy miles of great biking routes.
The company’s “Group Therapy Club” has a weekly wine tasting, often with charcuterie and cheese. A group of coffee enthusiasts who like to roast and brew amazing coffee uses one of the mini-kitchens.
Great Food, Exercise, and Services
Palantir’s kitchen chefs craft weekly menus made of organic and local foods and serve three meals a day. Family, friends, and guests are always welcome, and to-go boxes are always available.
All employees get local gym memberships, with discounts for family members. There’s a small gym on site with showers and yoga classes, along with services such as haircuts, a doctor, a chiropractor, massages, laundry, and dry cleaning.
Supporting the Mission
Why are these employee benefits so successful? Because Palantir’s leadership focuses on what matters—achieving its mission—and promote them with perks that boost productivity and free up employees’ time at and away from the office.
Offering excellent employee benefits is one way to keep talented workers from jumping ship says Entrepreneur article “The Basics of Employee Benefits.” The article is excerpted from “Start Your Own Business, Grow Your Business,” and “Selecting the Right Retirement Plan,” by David Meier, founder and COO of Small Business 411.
Many business owners believe they can’t afford to offer great benefits. But while avoiding benefits might yield short-term bottom-line benefits, it could destroy your business’s chances for long-term prosperity. The key is to understand what your employees value and what would improve their life-balance and productivity. Not all workplace (or employees) have the same needs.
Offering the right benefits can jump-start your company’s growth. The article quotes Joe Lineberry, senior vice president at Aon Consulting:
”Give employees the benefits they value, and they’ll be more satisfied, miss fewer workdays, be less likely to quit, and have higher commitment to meeting the company’s goals. The research shows that when employees feel their benefits needs are satisfied, they’re more productive.”
As the job market improves and competition for the best workers intensifies, examine your investment in worker perks. How do your employee benefits stack up against Palantir’s (or Clif Bars’)? If you don’t like what you see, take a step back and brainstorm! What can your company do to keep employees happy, healthy, and connected?
