Take advantage of Super Bowl Monday to build workplace community and have a little fun at work, too!
Everyone arrives Monday morning ready to talk about the important moments of the game, the commercials they loved or hated, Katy Perry and the half-time show or the party they hosted. One doesn’t need to love sports to be invested in the Super Bowl event.
After all, some say the pre-Super Bowl period is one of the most unproductive times of the year, what with millions of employees setting up betting pools, checking sports websites more often than usual and planning Super Bowl parties from work. That’s second only to today, the Monday after the game.
Take Advantage of employees’ desire to rehash the event
In “How to Plan for Your Employees’ Super Bowl Hangovers,” Inc. Magazine staff writer Graham Winfrey notes that roughly 1.5 million Americans didn’t show up to work the day after last year’s Super Bowl. Another 4.4 million came in late, according to a study conducted by the Workforce Institute at Kronos.
He suggests offering free breakfast to create an incentive for your workers to show up—and to show up on time.
“This kind of pro-employee gathering can boost morale on what can otherwise be a low-energy day.”
Maybe you’re reading this too late to serve breakfast, so bring in lunch. Or a big plate of cookies and lots of coffee for an afternoon “tailgate”. Provide employees the chance to visit and share stories; they’ll return to work feeling engaged and great about why they work for you. As columnist Cindy Krischer Goodman writes in “Use Superbowl to your advantage in the workplace”: Don’t overlook this amazing opportunity!

She cites a Challenger, Gray & Christmas survey that says 111 million Americans watched the game last year and that employees have a real problem getting anything done the day after. In fact, 22% of employees say the Monday following the Super Bowl is commonly a less productive day than usual. But Glassdoor reports 20% of employees say that morale is typically better in the office the day after the Super Bowl. Goodman sees opportunity.
