When the weather is beautiful and the kids are on vacation, no matter how much you love your job, it can be a challenge to focus on work. What better time to surprise and delight your workforce with summertime employee gift certificates?
There’s nothing like a special event and an unexpected gift to help employees feel energized, engaged and enjoying work in the summer. Take a couple of hours during the workweek if you can, to have some fun with your workers–throw a party and hand out gift certificates so they can do something fun with their families–go to the movies, go bowling, even enjoy a pizza or ice cream party on you. If you can’t allow time during work, host an after-work event.
Read on for inspiration and ideas for great summertime employee gift certificates to delight your workplace!
Take the time to plan your event properly, advises Brian Sutter, director of marketing at Wasp Barcode, in “The Art of a Good Summer Work Party.” If you’re organized, everyone will have more fun. His planning tips include:
Location–Be sure there’s enough room for everyone, whether it’s in your home, a private room at a restaurant, or at a local park. “Nothing will ruin a party faster than being cramped in a small space during hot weather,” Sutter writes.
Food–Offer plenty! Let your employees relax rather than asking them to prepare food for a potluck. Hire a caterer to cook and serve, so managers and employees can enjoy the party together. Don’t forget to consider the dietary needs of vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free staffers and the like.
Fun–Leaders should set the tone by not talking about work, and provide optional activities like cards, board games, bean bag toss, or Karaoke. “Use your summer work party as a time to learn more about your employees and their lives and interests outside of work,” recommends Sutter.
Instead of a party, you might organize a community-service project that you and your employees can do together. After all, as author Jenny Santi reminds in “The Secret to Happiness Is Helping Others,” it’s better to give than to receive. She’s written a book on the topic, The Giving Way to Happiness: Stories and Science Behind the Life-Changing Power of Giving.
Scientific research supports the idea that giving is a powerful pathway to personal growth and lasting happiness, Santi notes. MRI evidence shows that giving activates the same parts of the brain that food stimulates. And who doesn’t love food?
“Experiments show evidence that altruism is hardwired in the brain—and it’s pleasurable. Helping others may just be the secret to living a life that is not only happier but also healthier, wealthier, more productive, and meaningful,” writes Santi.
You can arrange to sort library books at a public school, plant flowers in a city park, assist at an organization that coaches disadvantaged women preparing for job interviews, cook and serve lunch at a community soup kitchen, or pitch in at just about any local nonprofit. In her article, “Strengthen Your Workforce Through Volunteer Programs,” Sylvia Ann Hewlett, founder and CEO of the Center for Talent Innovation and Hewlett Consulting Partners LLC, provides examples of community-service programs that companies such as PepsiCo, FedEx, and Ernst & Young offer.
Give Summertime Employee Gift Certificates
Whether it’s a party or a project, find a time during your event to hand out employee gift certificates with a bit of fanfare and a sincere thank you for your employees’ hard work and commitment to your business. Your employee gift certificates don’t have to be expensive, but you do need to share them with gratitude and appreciation. This unexpected gift will be the cherry on top of the sundae that’s your event.

Or create your own employee gift certificates. What about one that lets employees leave work on Fridays at 3 p.m. all summer, or gives a free day off to use anytime? Be creative–you know your workforce–what would people like most?
A summertime event and surprise employee gift certificates are sure to help your workers re-energize and re-engage. Besides, you’ll have fun together and get to know each other better. Enjoy!
