Happy Cinco de Mayo!
The fifth of May, Cinco de Mayo in Spanish, is a Mexican holiday commemorating Mexico’s victory over the French on May 5, 1862 in the battle of Puebla. It is observed in Mexico and the U.S. with parties and traditional Mexican food and drink, celebrating the rich and diverse Mexican cultural heritage. It’s one of numerous special spring days perfect for sharing your employee thank you. If the kids at school all celebrate, how about the adults too?
In the book, “1500 Ways to Reward Employees”, engagement guru, Bob Nelson recommends workplace parties as one of many effective group recognition efforts that motivate and reward hard-working employees. Like all other recognition efforts, be sure to use the opportunity to engage and share your employee thank you.
What’s it Take to Make A Fun Cinco de Mayo Workplace Party?
Great Mexican Food!
If your company has a good Mexican restaurant nearby, consider having lunch or an early company dinner catered. If you want it easy and less expensive, set up a taco bar with taco shells and tortillas to fill with a variety of meat and toppings including shredded lettuce, beans, guacamole, pico de gallo, shredded cheese, sour cream, and any other favorites.
You don’t need alcohol to have festive Mexican drinks. Serve virgin margaritas or lime punch, traditional horchata (a sweet rice and cinnamon drink) or even mango juice.
Want to skip hosting a whole meal? Then make an afternoon break of it and serve a selection of homemade salsas, chips and guacamole or go the sweet route and focus on desserts, Mexican style. Who doesn’t like Tres Leche Cake, really?
Fun Decorations and Mexican Music
A workplace party needs some inspiration. Easy decorations for Cinco de Mayo celebrations include Mexican flags, sombreros, cardboard cacti, and chili pepper lights. If time and/or budget necessitate keeping it simple, red, white, and green tableware will do the trick too. Consider decorating the walls with “gracias,” to reinforce your appreciation.
Make it lively with mariachi music. (Who knows, it might inspire some Mexican hat dancing.)
Buy a piñata. Don’t let the kids have all the fun. Decide whether to blindfold people or not and be sure you have enough space for safe swinging. Fill it with traditional candy or small items with the company logo on it.
Any workplace celebration is an opportunity to spend time and get to know employees better. It’s also the perfect time to make recognition public. Use the opportunity to thank the whole workforce and provide your special thanks to the individuals or teams that have gone above and beyond recently or done great work.
Regardless of the size of your workplace, scheduling some fun engagement goes a long way to helping workers feel valued and appreciated. It doesn’t need to be fancy or expensive. And, sharing your sincere gratitude with employees is priceless.
