Safety Incentives Work — When They’re Deployed Properly

One expert cites a frequent problem with safety incentives programs: “I see some companies put all their budget into the people who are safe for a year,” he told EHS Today. “I tell them, ‘Wait a minute. You’re spending all your money on the people who are safe. What are you doing to change the behavior of people who aren’t safe?'”
To effectively target the right employees, you want to build a culture of safety that encompasses everyone from leadership on down. Most employees won’t change their daily behavior based on an annual reward — it’s just too far removed from their regular routine.
