Easter is of course a major Christian holiday, but as with Christmas, companies can easily honor secular aspects of Easter for a celebration of workplace gratitude that includes everyone, regardless of religion.
Your employees will be thankful for the recognition and the post-winter pick-me-up. Read on for tips on making this Easter season a happy and inclusive one for all employees.
Why Share Workplace Gratitude At Easter?
In a Glassdoor blog post on how to keep religion in its place in the workplace, HR expert Meghan M. Biro draws a distinction between religious observation at holidays and the secular aspects of these celebrations.
“Holidays have many meanings,” she writes. “Pick apart the history of the spring holidays, and you’ll find they have many cultural and symbolic meanings, often tied to celebrations of changes in season, fertility rituals, feasts and so on.
“Easter and Passover are celebrated around the time of the spring (vernal) equinox, when the sun tilts on its axis towards earth and warms us up,” she writes.
Religiously observant or not, we all understand being grateful for the emergence of the spring season. It’s a time of renewal, a time for spring cleaning. Spring is Nature’s reminder that there really is life after winter (as hard as it is to believe for those of us living in colder climates).
Spring brings us together.
After all, Biro writes, “Who isn’t a fan of sun and warmth after a dark and chill winter?”
Tips for Easter in the Workplace
Beyond a focus on the secular aspects of the holiday, Biro’s advice for celebrating in the workplace are straight-forward and common sense. Don’t bring religious symbols into the workplace, for example.
Instead, decorate with bunnies, ducks and eggs, serve chocolates, and treat everyone to an ice cream certificate or pie certificate.
In conversations, focus on the family context of the event — Easter egg hunts for the kids, for example — and simply spending special time with relatives.
In your workplace celebration, choose activities that foster team-building (planting a flower bed together, for example) but allow room for individual recognition, such as handing out gift certificates accompanied by handwritten thank-you cards.
Above all, remember that the Easter season is a time of joy, hope and a renewed sense of purpose! In sharing your workplace gratitude with employees, focus on where your company is headed, how excited you are to share the future with employees and how grateful you are for their dedication and hard work.
