Sharing Employee GiftsHalf the fun of gift-giving is in the giving, and employee gifts are no different. It’s always satisfying to watch that look of surprise as a recipient takes a gift and peels back the wrapping paper, eyes bright with anticipation and excitement.
Handing out employee gifts anonymously and en masse won’t elicit much excitement. The last thing you want is for employee gifts to feel routine and impersonal, like another business report or company memo.
Here are some ideas for making your recipient feel valued and appreciated.
1. Browse Pinterest for crafty gift-wrap ideas. Not really the artistic type? No problem. The online pinboard Pinterest makes it easy to jump-start your creativity. One cool gift-wrap idea we came across on Pinterest is to hide a coiled gift certificate in the center of a Mason jar filled with jelly beans. Tie a pretty ribbon around the jar, and voila! You’ve got an inexpensive, cute and creative gift presentation. It also evokes childhood nostalgia — who doesn’t secretly still love the thrill of digging through a Cracker Jack or cereal box for that surprise gift?
2. Include a handwritten note of gratitude. You don’t have to write a novel, or even a paragraph. Just a sentence or two of sincere praise can take a gift from routine to memorable. The more personalized the note, the better. Mention how grateful you are for the employee’s work on a specific project, or for their dedication to achieving a particular goal.
3. Give publicly. Business Management Daily suggests public recognition may be just as important as the gift card itself: “Formally present cards in front of peers at staff meetings or other employee events.” Public recognition instills workplace pride and celebrates together the organizational and individual milestones of the past year.
4. Or give one-on-one. Sharing employee gifts publicly may work well in some organizations, but the opposite can also work well, depending on the size and culture of your workforce. Baudville.com suggests giving employees one-one-one “face time” this holiday season: “Sit down with them or briefly visit at their desk when you deliver the gift. This is a great opportunity to informally give recognition for outstanding accomplishments and efforts from the year.” Whichever method you choose, public or one-on-one, the key is to accompany the gift with a few words of personalized gratitude. A thoughtful compliment never goes unappreciated.
5. Turn gift-giving into a holiday game. Take a cue from Goldman Sachs, which earlier this year spent $360,000 to produce an elaborate scavenger hunt that sent employees and competitors “traipsing all over Manhattan for more than 16 hours” and raised $2.9 million for charity, the New York Times reported. It’s an over-the-top example, obviously, but the purpose behind it remains the same no matter the scale. Games like scavenger hunts build teamwork between employees, and even the simplest bit of intrigue will make gift-giving special and bring your employees together during a time of year that can otherwise be busy and stressful.
